This summer, much of the United States is dealing with several climate extremes at the same time — dangerous heat, wildfire smoke, and flash floods. That simultaneity is not a coincidence; it's the pattern.

If this summer feels like it is throwing everything at once, that is because it is. As of late July, nearly every region of the country is contending with some form of dangerous extreme weather — record-breaking heat in one place, choking wildfire smoke in another, flash flooding and violent monsoon storms in a third, sometimes all within a few hundred miles. It is worth stepping back from the individual disasters to see the pattern they form, because the pattern is the story we document every month.

What is happening right now

The extremes are stacking. Prolonged heat, low humidity, and steady winds have rapidly dried out live and dead vegetation across the West — fuel-moisture levels in most of Colorado and southern Wyoming are near or below their historic lows for this time of year, which is exactly the condition that turns a spark into a fast-moving fire. At the same time, other regions are getting too much water too fast. A hotter atmosphere holds more moisture — roughly 7% more for every degree Celsius of warming — so when it does rain, it can dump in bursts that overwhelm storm drains and creeks. Record heat, active fire weather, and flash-flood emergencies are not competing headlines. They are different symptoms of the same shift.

Why they arrive together

This is the part that ties back to the data. The warming we track pushes all of these extremes in the same direction at once. Hotter air dries soils and vegetation, lengthening and intensifying fire season. That same hotter air, over oceans and lakes, evaporates more water and loads the atmosphere for heavier downpours. When June came in as the second-warmest on record, that was not a standalone fact; it was the baseline that makes a summer like this one more likely.

Climate scientists put it plainly: the crisis is driving hotter, drier weather that parches the landscape and sets the stage for fiercer fire seasons — while also charging the atmosphere for the floods. The compounding is the point.

What it means locally

The household that prepared for heat also needs a plan for smoke; the neighborhood that cleared fire fuel also needs to think about where the water goes in a cloudburst.
