A Historic Smoke Event, and the Heat Driving It

This week brought one of the most severe wildfire-smoke pollution events in years across North America, driven by a heat wave putting 160 million people under alerts. Here's the data and the through-line.

This week, much of the United States and Canada has been breathing some of the dirtiest air in years. Analysts have called it a historic wildfire-smoke pollution event, with hazardous readings spreading across state and national borders — and it is riding on the back of a heat wave that has put more than 160 million Americans under heat alerts. These are not two stories. They are one, and it is the story the numbers we publish every month keep telling.

The data this week

The scale is in the acreage. Close to 40,000 fires have burned more than 3.6 million acres in the U.S. so far in 2026 — including roughly half a million acres in just the past two weeks, running nearly a million acres ahead of the ten-year average for mid-July. The smoke from those fires, joined by enormous blazes in Canada, has pushed air quality into the worst category on the index: at the event's peak, monitors reading "Hazardous" were scattered across five U.S. states, with more in Ontario.

The heat feeding it set its own marks. Salt Lake City hit an all-time record of 109°F on July 12, and the north-central U.S. baked under what meteorologists described as one of the strongest upper-level heat ridges ever observed there. That is the ridge that dried the fuels and lit the match.

Smoke is a public-health event, not just a view

It is easy to treat a smoky sky as a nuisance — a hazy skyline, a lurid sunset. The health record says otherwise. The fine particles in wildfire smoke, measured as PM2.5, travel deep into the lungs and bloodstream, and the burden falls hardest on the people with the least protection: outdoor workers, older adults, children, and households without clean indoor air or the ability to leave. It is the same inequity we traced in our look at who bears the weight of extreme heat — the exposure is not shared evenly, and neither is the ability to escape it.

The through-line

Here is why we keep putting these numbers in front of you. A single smoky week can be filed under bad luck. But it does not stand alone. It sits directly on top of the trend we reported when June came in as the second-warmest June on record, and right after the record heat that opened July over the Northeast. Attribution scientists have already weighed in on this event: the heat that fueled these fires was made up to five times more likely by climate change, and would have been highly unlikely in a world without it.

That is the whole argument for reading the trend rather than the rank. Warming lengthens and intensifies fire weather; hotter, drier air turns more acres to fuel; and the smoke turns a regional fire into a continental air-quality emergency.
