Contribute Your Time and Talents
TerraFuture's programs depend on the energy, skills, and dedication of volunteers from across our community. In 2025, over 340 volunteers contributed more than 8,200 hours to garden stewardship, data collection, event support, youth mentoring, and skilled professional services. Volunteering with TerraFuture is a direct way to contribute to measurable environmental progress in the neighborhoods that need it most.
Volunteer Opportunities
Garden Stewards
Garden stewards are the backbone of TerraFuture's 35 community gardens. Stewards commit to a minimum of four hours per week during the growing season (April through October) and help maintain communal beds, manage composting stations, welcome new gardeners, and coordinate harvest sharing. No prior gardening experience is required; TerraFuture provides training, tools, and ongoing support.
Time commitment: 4 hours/week, April-October Training provided: Garden orientation, organic growing basics, composting, tool safety
Data Collection Volunteers
TerraFuture's environmental monitoring network relies on trained volunteers to assist with seasonal data collection activities, including air quality sampling, tree canopy surveys, stormwater monitoring, and biodiversity counts. Data collection volunteers work alongside our data team and receive training in field protocols, data entry procedures, and quality assurance standards.
Time commitment: 6-8 hours per month during active collection periods Training provided: Field protocols, data entry, sensor calibration basics
Event Support
TerraFuture hosts community celebrations, garden open days, policy forums, and educational workshops throughout the year. Event volunteers help with setup, registration, wayfinding, food service, children's activities, and cleanup. Events are a great entry point for new volunteers who want to experience TerraFuture's community firsthand.
Time commitment: Per event (typically 3-6 hours) Training provided: Event briefing on the day
Youth Mentors
Youth mentors are paired with Climate Academy students for the duration of a 16-week semester. Mentors provide encouragement, accountability, and career perspective to students ages 12 to 18 as they complete environmental research projects. Mentors meet with their mentees for one hour per week, either in person or virtually, and attend the end-of-semester Community Climate Presentation.
Time commitment: 1 hour/week for 16 weeks, plus orientation and closing event Training provided: Mentor orientation, youth safeguarding, communication guidelines Requirements: Background check required; prior experience working with youth preferred
Skills-Based Volunteering
TerraFuture welcomes professionals who want to contribute specialized skills to support our operations and mission. Current needs include:
- Graphic design: Program materials, infographics, social media content, annual report layout
- Legal: Contract review, nonprofit compliance, policy analysis support
- Accounting: Financial reporting support, audit preparation, grant budget review
- Web development: Dashboard features, accessibility improvements, content management
- Photography and videography: Program documentation, event coverage, storytelling
Skills-based volunteers typically commit to a defined project with a clear scope and timeline, arranged in consultation with the relevant TerraFuture team.
What Volunteers Say
Our volunteers consistently describe their experience as meaningful, well-organized, and connected to real impact. Ninety-one percent of volunteers surveyed in 2025 said they would recommend volunteering with TerraFuture to a friend, and 74% continued volunteering beyond their initial commitment.
