Accessibility Statement

Our Commitment
TerraFuture believes that environmental justice includes digital justice. The same communities disproportionately affected by environmental harm are often underserved by inaccessible technology. We are committed to ensuring that our website, data dashboard, and digital communications are accessible to all people, including those with visual, auditory, motor, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.
Accessibility is not an afterthought at TerraFuture. It is a core design principle, consistent with our mission of building inclusive, resilient communities.
Standards and Conformance
TerraFuture's website is designed and developed to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level, as published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.1 AA is the widely accepted standard for web accessibility and addresses the needs of users across a broad range of disabilities.
Our conformance efforts include:
-
Perceivable: All non-text content includes text alternatives. Video content includes captions. Color is not used as the sole means of conveying information. Text maintains a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background. Content can be resized to 200% without loss of functionality.
-
Operable: All functionality is accessible via keyboard navigation. Users have sufficient time to read and interact with content. Content does not contain elements that flash more than three times per second. Pages have clear, descriptive titles and a consistent navigation structure. Focus order is logical and visible.
-
Understandable: Text is written in plain, clear language. Forms include descriptive labels and instructions. Error messages identify the issue and suggest corrections. Navigation is consistent across the site.
-
Robust: Content is compatible with current and reasonably foreseeable assistive technologies, including screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition software, and alternative input devices. The site uses valid, semantic HTML markup.
Data Dashboard Accessibility
TerraFuture's environmental data dashboard presents complex data visualizations, charts, and maps. We recognize that data visualization poses particular accessibility challenges and have taken the following steps:
- All charts and graphs include text-based data tables as alternatives
- Map-based visualizations include text descriptions of geographic patterns and tabular data equivalents
- Interactive dashboard elements are keyboard-navigable and compatible with screen readers
- Color palettes for data visualizations are tested for color blindness accessibility using established simulation tools
- Data can be downloaded in structured formats (CSV, JSON) for use with assistive technologies or custom tools
We are continually improving the accessibility of our data platform. If you encounter a barrier while using the dashboard, please let us know so we can address it.
Ongoing Evaluation
TerraFuture conducts regular accessibility evaluations of our website and digital properties, including:
- Automated accessibility scanning using industry-standard tools on a monthly basis
- Manual testing with keyboard-only navigation and screen reader software quarterly
- Periodic review by external accessibility consultants
- Incorporation of user feedback from people with disabilities
When issues are identified, we prioritize remediation based on severity and impact. Critical barriers that prevent access to core content or functionality are addressed within five business days. Other issues are incorporated into our regular development cycle.
Accommodations for Programs and Events
TerraFuture's commitment to accessibility extends beyond the digital realm. For in-person programs, events, and community meetings, we provide:
- Wheelchair-accessible venues for all public events
- Sign language interpretation upon request (minimum five business days advance notice)
- Large-print materials upon request
- Assistive listening devices at public forums and presentations
- Accessible transportation information in event communications
- Dietary accommodation for events with food service
If you need an accommodation to participate in a TerraFuture program or event, contact us at accessibility@terrafuture.org or call (555) 312-8800. We ask for at least five business days advance notice for most accommodations, though we will do our best to fulfill requests made with shorter notice.
Known Limitations
While we strive for full conformance, we acknowledge the following current limitations:
- Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We are working to remediate these and can provide accessible alternatives upon request.
- Third-party content embedded on our site (such as social media feeds or external mapping services) may not meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. We select third-party tools with accessibility in mind and advocate for improved accessibility with our vendors.
- Some legacy data visualizations created before our current accessibility standards were adopted may lack complete text alternatives. These are being updated on a rolling basis.
Feedback and Contact
Your feedback helps us improve. If you encounter an accessibility barrier on our website or in our programs, or if you have suggestions for improvement, please contact us:
TerraFuture Accessibility Coordinator Email: accessibility@terrafuture.org Phone: (555) 312-8800 Mail: 1247 Greenway Boulevard, Suite 200, Metro City, MC 98012
We aim to respond to all accessibility-related inquiries within three business days. If a reported issue cannot be immediately resolved, we will provide a timeline for remediation and, where possible, an alternative means of accessing the affected content or service.
Regulatory Compliance
TerraFuture's accessibility practices are informed by applicable laws and standards, including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines. We monitor evolving accessibility standards and update our practices accordingly.
