Communities
Partnering with 47 neighborhoods across four districts to create measurable, equitable environmental change.
Communities
The Heart of TerraFuture
TerraFuture exists because of the communities we serve. Every program, every data point, and every policy campaign begins with the people who live, work, and raise families in the neighborhoods we partner with. Since 2019, we have worked alongside 47 neighborhoods across four districts, building relationships grounded in trust, transparency, and shared purpose.
Our approach is simple: communities know their own challenges best. TerraFuture provides the tools, data, and organizational support that residents need to turn local knowledge into measurable environmental progress.
Neighborhoods We Serve
North District
The North District was one of TerraFuture's first partner areas, with three pilot neighborhoods joining in 2019. Today, 14 neighborhoods participate in at least one TerraFuture program. The district has seen the most significant progress in urban canopy coverage, with 7,200 trees planted and a 15% increase in shade coverage in targeted heat island zones. Key partners include the Riverside Neighborhood Association, Oakmont Community Center, and Lakeview Resilience Hub.
South District
The South District faces some of the region's most pressing environmental justice challenges, including proximity to industrial facilities and historically limited access to green space. TerraFuture has operated here since 2020, with 12 partner neighborhoods. The Clean Air Now campaign originated from South District residents who documented elevated particulate matter levels using TerraFuture-supplied sensors. The district has 6,100 trees planted and three active green infrastructure corridor projects.
East District
Joining the network in 2021, the East District's 11 partner neighborhoods have focused heavily on community solar and energy efficiency. The district hosts six of TerraFuture's 14 community solar installations, generating significant energy cost savings for over 800 households. East District also has the highest participation rate in the Climate Literacy Workshop series, with 38% of adult residents having completed at least one course.
West District
The newest addition to TerraFuture's network, the West District entered the planning phase in late 2025 with 10 neighborhoods expressing interest. Community input sessions are scheduled for spring 2026 to identify priority environmental challenges and design initial programming. Early engagement has focused on water quality concerns and the need for additional park space in rapidly developing areas.
Resident Leadership
TerraFuture's Community Leadership Program trains residents to become environmental advocates and organizers within their own neighborhoods. These leaders serve as the connective tissue between TerraFuture's programs and the daily lives of community members.
Community Leader Roles:
- Neighborhood Liaisons coordinate between TerraFuture staff and residents, ensuring programs reflect local needs and priorities. Each partner neighborhood has at least one active liaison.
- Data Stewards are trained to operate environmental monitoring equipment, verify data quality, and communicate findings to their neighbors in accessible terms.
- Workshop Facilitators are graduates of the Climate Literacy program who go on to co-facilitate future workshops, bringing personal experience and cultural context to the curriculum.
- Advocacy Champions lead grassroots organizing for policy campaigns, coordinating petition drives, public hearing attendance, and community meetings.
To date, 320 community leaders have been trained across all four districts. Leaders commit to a 12-month engagement cycle, with ongoing support from TerraFuture's community engagement team.
Success Stories
Riverside Community Garden and Solar Project
When residents of Riverside identified an abandoned lot as both an eyesore and a missed opportunity, TerraFuture helped them transform it into a community garden with integrated solar panels. The project now provides fresh produce to 40 families, generates 12 kW of clean energy, and serves as an outdoor classroom for the neighborhood elementary school. Resident leader Maria Rodriguez spearheaded the effort, securing a $45,000 community grant with data and planning support from TerraFuture.
Northside Academy Environmental Curriculum
Educator James Kimura participated in TerraFuture's Teacher Training Institute in 2022 and brought environmental data directly into his middle school science classes. Students now conduct quarterly air quality assessments around their school campus, compare results with TerraFuture's open dashboard data, and present findings to school administrators. The project has expanded to three additional schools in the North District, reaching over 600 students annually.
South District Air Quality Campaign
After TerraFuture-supplied air quality sensors revealed consistently elevated particulate matter readings near a South District industrial corridor, a coalition of 200 residents organized to demand stronger emissions oversight. The campaign included testimony at city council hearings, a data-driven report co-authored with TerraFuture's research team, and a sustained media outreach effort. The result was a new municipal ordinance requiring enhanced air quality monitoring within a two-mile radius of industrial facilities.
Get Your Community Involved
Interested in bringing TerraFuture's programs to your neighborhood? The process is straightforward and begins with community interest.
Step 1: Express Interest — Contact TerraFuture through our website, email, or phone. A community engagement coordinator will respond within five business days.
Step 2: Neighborhood Assessment — TerraFuture conducts an initial environmental assessment of your area, including air quality, green space coverage, heat vulnerability, and existing community resources.
Step 3: Community Input Session — We host an open meeting in your neighborhood to hear directly from residents about environmental priorities, concerns, and ideas.
Step 4: Program Design — Based on the assessment and community input, TerraFuture proposes a customized program plan, including timelines, goals, and metrics.
Step 5: Launch and Ongoing Partnership — Programs begin with an onboarding workshop for participating residents. TerraFuture commits to a minimum two-year engagement cycle, with quarterly check-ins and annual reviews.
Communities of any size are welcome. We prioritize neighborhoods facing environmental justice challenges, limited access to green infrastructure, or disproportionate exposure to pollution and climate impacts. All TerraFuture programs are offered at no cost to participating residents.
