Two weeks ago we wrote about France's worst wildfires since the Second World War. The fire has not stayed in France. This month Spain is enduring what officials are calling its most destructive wildfire season on record — the same climate signal we have tracked all summer, now burning across the Iberian Peninsula.
The scale
The numbers are staggering even against a summer already full of them. By early August, roughly 500,000 hectares had burned across the European Union from more than 1,500 fires — more than double the burned area at the same point last year, and well over twice the twenty-year average. Spain has borne the heaviest share, with around 150,000 hectares lost.
The individual fires have broken records that stood for generations. A blaze near Ávila, west of Madrid, grew to roughly 50,000 hectares — the largest single wildfire in Spain's recorded history — while fires around Madrid merged into the worst the region has ever seen. Spanish officials described conditions in places as simply "beyond the capacity of firefighters to contain," and the human toll followed: some 60,000 people evacuated from the Ávila and Madrid fires alone, with tens of thousands more displaced elsewhere. The EU activated its shared rescEU firefighting fleet, pre-positioning the most aircraft and crews since the program began.
The precondition, again: heat and dryness
If this sounds familiar, it should. The ingredient behind these fires is the one we keep naming: an atmosphere primed to burn. This is the physical expression of the record we reported when July came in joint-second-warmest with the hottest ocean ever measured, and of the exceptionally hot, dry conditions Copernicus flagged as fueling Europe's fires. Western Europe just lived through its warmest June–July on record. Heat like that pulls the moisture out of soil and vegetation until a landscape becomes, in effect, kindling — and then it only takes a spark.
Why we keep following the fire
Our fieldwork is local, so we return to the same question: why cover fires an ocean away? Because they are no longer separable events. A record-dry Europe, a summer of stacked extremes in the U.S., Canadian smoke over American cities — these are one phenomenon read on different continents, and the throughline is the warming we document every month. Watching a country lose its largest fire on record, then watching its neighbor do the same weeks later, is watching the baseline move in real time.
The Spanish framing carries the same hard lesson as the French one: the systems built for the old climate — the fire crews, the evacuation plans, the twenty-year averages — are being asked to handle conditions they were never sized for. Closing that gap is the adaptation challenge of the decade, and it is the same on both sides of the Atlantic.
The bottom line
Spain's worst fire season on record, arriving on the heels of France's, is not a run of bad luck. It is what a warmed, dried continent produces. The response has to match the scale: cutting the emissions drying the world's forests, and building fire response and community resilience sized for the climate we actually live in — in Ávila, and everywhere the averages no longer hold.
